What do I need to buy?

If you have pre-existing posts...

If you have pre-existing posts you need the Wire Balustrade Kits, Wire & Tools to install the wires.

Wire Balustrade Kits (rather than tools or wires) are the best starting point to work out compatibility between your existing posts, and any wire and tools that may be required for installation of the kits.

Choosing a Kit can get in-depth. We made it easier - check out our guides here.

If you have pre-existing posts (but need wire supporting posts)...

Wire Support Posts are used to help meet safety and code requirements for wire balustrade. Wire is not sufficient on its own to create a safe barrier. It requires support to help prevent the wires from spreading too far apart.

If you have pre-existing posts but not enough supporting intermediate posts you can check out our Intermediate Posts for Wire Balustrade. We have a wide range of posts to suit different aesthetics, handrail types and scenarios. These are thin-profile posts that are considered for wire supports but are not considered structural.

You might also consider larger Posts for Wire Balustrade. We have 50mm intermediate posts in a wide range that might be what you need.

If you need posts...

There are a number of options for Post and Wire Balustrade systems. Functionally, they mostly do the same thing. Your best option is to pick a style you like and work from there.

Your main considerations when picking a style are:

  • Handrail Type: Are you going to be using Round or Flat Handrail with this?
  • Post Profile: Do you prefer a Square or Round look to your posts?
  • Material Finish: Do you want a Satin Finish, Mirror Polish or Coloured look?
  • Type of Material: Do you want Stainless or Aluminium?
  • Specification: Are you using common NCC specification, or do you need something custom?

We have a full breakdown of all our Post Ranges here to help you choose.

Do you do installations?

No, we don't do installations of any kind. We are a materials supplier only.

If you require someone to complete the installation for you, you might consider a friendly tradespersons who can. Trades who work on decking installations are often familiar with different types of balustrading, and some may have performed wire balustrading installations before.

DIY Friendly

Many of our wire balustrading solutions are DIY friendly. We have ranges of easy-to-install kits, fully-made wire balustrading posts and a swathe of installation tools to get the job done.

Can you check if I am compliant with regulations?

Compliance checks require a qualified professional to assess your specific requirements. Compliance is performed by a different part of the building industry than where we sit. We are a materials supplier only and are not qualified to give you specific advice on whether your balustrade is compliant.

There are many factors that change what you can and cannot do with wire balustrading.

It is best to get a qualified professional (builder, building surveyor, building inspector etc.) to provide you with advice before you purchase any material. Your local code and scenario may dictate that certain solutions are not suitable - which changes what materials you should purchase.

Regulations: NCC vs Local

The main reason you work with a local qualified professional that can visit your project on-site is they will point out issues that relate to local compliance for your specific project across many different building regulations. - You might have requirements that are different from your neighbour or your friend.

A qualified professional may advise you that local building regulations differ from the National Construction Code (NCC) Guidelines.

Whilst most councils follow NCC directly, not all do. Some councils are stricter in what is required for a safe barrier then others and specify what is and isn't allowed.

In addition, fall-height, nearby water bodies (e.g. pools) and usage (e.g. predicted loading forces) may all impact what you should build.

You may be able to put wire balustrading in certain parts of your home and not others.

What do I have to build if the fall is <1m?

See above for questions on professional advice. (Always get a local qualified professional to assess your proposal).

This is often considered a grey area, as the NCC does not provide direct instruction as to what to do in this scenario - often triggering wire balustrading specification requirements by terms of 'if a barrier is required'. But not specifying what to do when a barrier is not required.

We would recommend that you consider building a sufficient barrier anyway.

'Doing what you want' may mean that your wire balustrade doesn't work as a barrier allowing people (especially kids) to still go through it.

Again, talk to a local professional as you have have other considerations and your requirements may differ from NCC guidelines..
